Electric gates in Chelsea present specific considerations that do not arise in most other parts of London. The combination of narrow frontages on period townhouses, short driveways, a high concentration of mews properties with tight entrances, and the most strictly enforced conservation area and listed building framework in London means that every Chelsea gate installation begins with a more detailed brief than a standard residential job elsewhere.

The standard permitted development height rules still apply — gates under one metre adjacent to a highway, under two metres elsewhere — but RBKC's Article 4 Directions cover the entire borough and can remove permitted development rights that apply everywhere else in London. A gate that would be straightforward permitted development in Wandsworth may require a formal planning application in Chelsea.

Metal railings are a defining feature of Chelsea's streetscape. Matching the bar spacing, the finial profile, and the visual weight of the original is the only appropriate approach.

Where original ironwork has been lost or badly replaced, the design brief is still informed by the period and the conservation area character. Georgian Chelsea railings should be simple and precise — vertical bars, lance finials, no scroll work or decorative panel infill, in white or black depending on whether the building is stucco or brick-fronted. Victorian Chelsea railings can carry more decorative detail.
